Whanganui Regional Museum houses one of New Zealand's oldest museums, opened to the public in 1890. Its 200,000 objects focus on Māori arts and culture, natural history and post-colonial European history, including collections of national and international significance. The Museum occupies an art deco building in Whanganui’s historic Queen’s Park. Its permanent galleries are dedicated to Māori material cultural, extinct birds and the development of the cultural history of Whanganui, while temporary galleries explore local national and international content, and a lively varied public programme for kids and adults includes hands-on activities, concerts and lectures. The Museum also boasts a 200-person theatre and education spaces, in which specialised and multimedia programming can be held.

A highlight of the Museum is its storage facilities, where treasures are held when they are not on display. Guided back-of-house tours and face-to-face lectures can be held for groups by prior arrangement.
